About this collection

On February 19, 1942, ten weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which lead to the exclusion, removal and detention of Japanese Americans on the West Coast.

This collection documents these events and consists primarily of publications from the U.S. War Relocation Authority, the agency created to implement the Executive Order. The collection honors the legacy of Miss Clara Breed, a former director of the San Diego Public Library, who corresponded with many children impacted by this relocation.
